Rochester falls - Mauritius

Unused.

"Rochester Falls is a waterfall on the Savanne River. It is famous for the strange rectangular form of its rocky flank.

It is located approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi) from Souillac. The falls tumble from the Savanne River from a height of about 10 m (33 ft) where constant erosion has fashioned the basalt rock into upright columns. Youngsters often perform dare-devil dives into the water below." In: Wikipedia

"Iguazu Falls, Iguazú Falls, Iguassu Falls or Iguaçu Falls (Portuguese: Cataratas do Iguaçu; Spanish: Cataratas del Iguazú) are waterfalls of the Iguazu River on the border of the Brazilian state of Paraná and the Argentinian province of Misiones. The falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu. The Iguazu River rises near the city of Curitiba. The river flows through Brazil for most of its course, although most of the falls are on the Argentine side. Below its confluence with the San Antonio River, the Iguazu River forms the boundary between Argentina and Brazil.

The name "Iguazu" comes from the Guarani or Tupi words "y", meaning "water", and "ûasú ", meaning "big". Legend has it that a god planned to marry a beautiful woman named Naipí, who fled with her mortal lover Tarobá in a canoe. In rage, the god sliced the river, creating the waterfalls and condemning the lovers to an eternal fall. The first European to find the falls was the Spanish conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541.

On November 11 of 2011, Iguazu Falls was announced as one of the seven winners of the New Seven Wonders of Nature by the New Seven Wonders of the World Foundation." In: Wikipedia

Changbai Waterfall at Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve, Jilin - China

?

RR Portugal x World, G37 sent by "plisd", a stunning view of the fall!

This Reserve belongs to the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme

"To the north of Heavenly Lake there exists an exit for the Chengcha River. Running gently for about 1,200 meters (0.74 miles), the river suddenly becomes a churning rapids and drops from a 68 meters (223 ft) high cliff. This is the famous Changbai Waterfall, the highest volcanic waterfall in the world. Watching it from far away, the waterfall appears like a white ribbon suspended in midair. As you approach it, you can hear the loud roar and feel the chilliness of the waterfall. Another alternative to watch the waterfall is climbing to Heifengkou on the main peak. Gales blow ceaselessly in this col, making it hard for visitors to walk and climb. But it remains the best place to watch the panorama of the waterfall. Apart from Changbai Waterfall, more than ten smaller waterfalls are also available in the mountain. Visitors have to enter the Northern Slope Entrance to see the waterfall." In: Travel China Guide

Big Waterfall of Mont-Dore, Puy-de-Dôme - France

"La Grande Cascade du Mont Dore (the Big Waterfall of the Mt Dore) was a pleasant waterfall excusion that took in not only the waterfall but wonderful birds eye views of the alpine town of Mt Dore as well as the surrounding mountains and massifs including Puy de Sancy.

There were several cascades and waterfalls in the Mt Dore area, but the Grande Cascade was the most impressive one, which was why I cherrypicked it on our limited time at the source of the Dordogne River (note: I only realized we were at the source when I saw a local map showing a stream called Dore and another called Dogne join and form the Dordogne River near town). Although it was said to be 30m, it appeared taller than that probably because we were able to see it from across town near the Mt Dore visitor center (looking in the southeast direction high up above the trees on the cliffs)." Poço do Inferno, Serra da Estrela - Portugal

© Postais Serra da Estrela

Sent by "Blicas Blocas"

"By going through the Inferno Well Route we can see a dualism of landscape, humanized and natural, marked by different kinds of vegetation, with hardwoods and softwoods forests, where the senses arouse different emotions along the trail.

Due to the higher schistose peaks, formed by corneal rocks (phenomenon that occurs when the plastic and hot magma rises through pre-existents rocks), predominate steeps landscapes, where water lines emerge like the Poço do Inferno (Inferno Well) cascade. This natural waterfall is about 10 meters high and sometimes turns into ice during the more stringent winter.

It’s a geological monument with an extreme beauty and one of the most interesting points of this route, being one of the ex-libris of Manteigas and Serra da Estrela (Star Mountain). " In: Manteigas Trilhos Verdes

Cirque de Navacelles - France (UNESCO WHS)

© Meridionales

Sent by Paula Ribeiro

"The Cirque de Navacelles is large erosional landform, an incised meander, located towards the southern edge of the Massif Central mountain range in France. It is located near Saint-Maurice-Navacelles and Blandas between the Hérault département and the Gard département.
The cirque is isolated, with only a few small villages in the surrounding area. With the 2004 completion of the Millau Viaduct and the A75 motorway linking Clermont-Ferrand and Pézenas, tourism of the region that includes Cirque de Navacelles has increased." In: Wikipedia

"This 302,319 ha property, in the southern part of central France, is a mountain landscape interspersed by deep valleys that is representative of the relationship between agro-pastoral systems and their biophysical environment, notably through drailles or drove roads. Villages and substantial stone farmhouses on deep terraces of the Causses reflect the organization of large abbeys from the 11th century. Mont Lozère, inside the property, is one of the last places where summer transhumance is still practiced in the traditional way, using the drailles." In: UNESCO

Vøringfossen, Eidfjord - Norway

© Aune Forlag and Ole P. Rorvik (photo)

Sent by "joanonha"

"Vøringfossen is the 83rd highest waterfall in Norway on the basis of total fall. It lies at the top of Måbødalen in the municipality of Eidfjord, in Hordaland, not far from Highway 7, which connects Oslo with Bergen. It has a total drop of 182 meters, and a major drop of 163 meters. It is perhaps the most famous in the country and a major tourist attraction on the way down from Hardangervidda to Hardangerfjord.

The name Vøringfossen (Old Norse Vyrðingr) is derived from the verb vyrða (English: esteem, revere). The last element fossen, the finite form of foss (waterfall), is a later addition." In: Wikipedia

"Meiji no Mori Minō Kokutei Koen is a Quasi-National Park in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. It was founded on 11 December 1967 and has an area of 9.6 km².

The park is located on Mt Minō in Ōsaka Prefecture. Its grounds encompasse 963 ha of lower mountain slope and forest and reside at relatively low altitudes of 100 m to 600m.

Geologically, sedimentary rocks from the Mesozoic Era dominate the geology of the location with ccasional outcroppings of granite and diorite. The tomb of Kaijyo, the founding monk of Katsuō-ji Temple built in 765, is located inside of the park.

Despite its proximity to the Metropolitan Osaka Area, the park is inhabited by 1,300 plant species and 3,500 insect species. The location is also known as a paradise for a large population of birds, animals, fish, and little creatures, as well as monkeys, which are protected by law. The Tōkai Nature Trail, which starts at Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi-National Park, ends here." In: Wikipedia

Puente Nuevo and the fall of Ronda - Spain

© Publicaciones Ronda

Sent by "Joaninha"

"Ronda is a city in the Spanish province of Málaga. It is located about 100 kilometres (62 mi) west of the city of Málaga, within the autonomous community of Andalusia.

[...]Three bridges, Puente Romano ("Roman Bridge", also known as the Puente San Miguel), Puente Viejo ("Old Bridge", also known as the Puente Árabe or "Arab Bridge") and Puente Nuevo ("New Bridge"), span the canyon. The term "nuevo" is a bit of a misnomer, as the building of this bridge commenced in 1751 and took until 1793 to complete. The Puente Nuevo is the tallest of the bridges, towering 120 metres (390 ft) above the canyon floor, and all three serve as some of the city's most impressive features." In: Wikipedia
