Map of the Oregon Trail - USA

© Illustration: Phil Timper; Smith-Western, Inc

Used, sent by Sapic12

"The Oregon Trail is a 2,000-mile (3,200 km) historic east-west large wheeled wagon route and emigrant trail that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. The eastern part of the Oregon Trail spanned part of the future state of Kansas and nearly all of what are now the states of Nebraska and Wyoming. The western half of the trail spanned most of the future states of Idaho and Oregon.

The Oregon Trail was laid by fur trappers and traders from about 1811 to 1840 and was only passable on foot or by horseback. By 1836, when the first migrant wagon train was organized in Independence, Missouri, a wagon trail had been cleared to Fort Hall, Idaho. Wagon trails were cleared further and further west, eventually reaching all the way to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. What came to be called the Oregon Trail was complete, even as improved roads, "cutouts", ferries and bridges made the trip faster and safer almost every year. From various "jumping off points" branched in Missouri, Iowa or Nebraska Territory, the routes converged along the lower Platte River Valley near Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory and led to rich farmlands west of the Rocky Mountains." Information on the back side: "Steller Sea Lions sunning themselves in the Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska."

"Kenai Fjords National Park is a United States National Park established in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. The park covers an area of 669,984 acres (1,046.85 sq mi; 2,711.33 km2) on the Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska, near the town of Seward. The park contains the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States. The park is named for the numerous fjords carved by glaciers moving down the mountains from the ice field. The field is the source of at least 38 glaciers, the largest of which is Bear Glacier. The park lies just to the west of Seward, a popular port for cruise ships. Exit Glacier is reachable by road and is a popular tour destination. The remainder of the park is primarily accessible by boat. The fjords are glacial valleys that have been submerged below sea level by a combination of rising sea levels and land subsidence." In: Wikipedia

McCloud Falls, California - USA

© Erich Ziller (photo) / Eastman's West

Sent from Portugal by "PilotOne"

Back side of the card: "A well maintained trail provides a beautiful hike to 3 spectacular waterfalls along the McCloud River"

"It rises from several spring-fed streams in the Cascades approximately 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County. It flows initially west, passing south of Mt. Shasta and receiving streams that drain the southern slope of the peak. From Mt. Shasta it flows generally southwest through Lake McCloud and through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It joins Shasta Lake, formed by the Shasta Dam, approximately 15 miles (24 km) north of Redding, with the lower 10 miles (16 km) of the river forming the middle arm of the lake. The McCloud arm joins in at the Pit River Bridge on Interstate 5, 5 miles (8.0 km) north of the city of Shasta Lake.

The river is well known for a series of waterfalls which tumble over basaltic lava flows, known collectively as the Falls of the McCloud River." In: Wikipedia

This card has such a story... I was so happy to receive it, but them it has very disappointing... It was sent from Cairo, Egypt, was printed in Egypt, it says "Egypt" both on front and back sides, but the photo is from the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas, USA...

"Luxor Las Vegas is a hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The 30-story hotel, owned and operated by MGM Resorts International, has a 120,000-square-foot (11,000 m2) casino with over 2,000 slot machines and 87 table games.

In the 2008 to 2009 renovation, it has a new, highly modernized, and contemporary design and contains a total of 4,400 rooms, including 442 suites, lining the interior walls of a pyramid style tower and within twin 22-story ziggurat towers that were built as later additions.

The hotel is named after the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes) in Egypt. Luxor is the second largest hotel in Las Vegas (the largest being the MGM Grand) and the eighth largest in the world. Green sea turtle from Carolina coast - USA

© Peter Doran

US-1924504 sent by "david2051"

Information on the back side: "The green sea turtle grows to a maximum size of about 4 feet and weight of 440 pounds" .

"The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), also known as the green turtle, black (sea) turtle, or Pacific green turtle, is a large sea turtle of the family Cheloniidae. It is the only species in the genus Chelonia. Its range extends throughout tropical and subtropical seas around the world, with two distinct populations in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The common name derives from the usually green fat found beneath its carapace.

This sea turtle's dorsoventrally flattened body is covered by a large, teardrop-shaped carapace; it has a pair of large, paddle-like flippers. It is usually lightly colored, although in the eastern Pacific populations parts of the carapace can be almost black. Unlike other members of its family, such as the hawksbill sea turtle and loggerhead sea turtle, C. mydas is mostly herbivorous. The adults commonly inhabit shallow lagoons, feeding mostly on various species of seagrasses." In: Wikipedia

"Stretching over more than 200,000 ha, this exceptionally beautiful park is home to more than 3,500 plant species, including almost as many trees (130 natural species) as in all of Europe. Many endangered animal species are also found there, including what is probably the greatest variety of salamanders in the world. Since the park is relatively untouched, it gives an idea of temperate flora before the influence of humankind." In: UNESCO

"Charley Harper (August 4, 1922 - June 10, 2007) was a Cincinnati-based American Modernist artist. He was best known for his highly stylized wildlife prints, posters and book illustrations.

Born in Frenchton, West Virginia in 1922, Harper's upbringing on his family farm influenced his work to his last days. He left his farm home to study art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and won the academy’s first Stephen H. Wilder Traveling Scholarship. While at the Academy, and supposedly on the first day, Charley met fellow artist Edie Mckee, whom he would marry shortly after graduation in 1947." In: Wikipedia

US-1642853 - Agate Falls in Interior Township

© Penrod / Hiawatha

US-1642853 sent by "jwhite"

This waterfall is one of the most beautiful I've received!

"The Agate Falls Scenic Site is a waterfall and state park located in Interior Township, in southeastern Ontonagon County, Michigan. The waterfall is 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Bruce Crossing, Michigan on the state highway M-28.

Agate Falls is a 39-foot-high (12 m) waterfall of the Ontonagon River. Dropping down from the highlands of the western Upper Peninsula, this river drops 875 feet (267 m) from the Bond Falls Flowage to Lake Superior, and Agate Falls is part of this change in elevation. The water flows over a shelf of erosion-resistant sandstone.

The falls can be seen from a trail accessible from a parking lot on M-28. A hiking bridge, which once carried the tracks of the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway, spans the falls." In: Wikipedia
