Sydney Opera House - Australia (UNESCO WHS)

© David Messent

New, sent by Manuela

"Inaugurated in 1973, the Sydney Opera House is a great architectural work of the 20th century that brings together multiple strands of creativity and innovation in both architectural form and structural design. A great urban sculpture set in a remarkable waterscape, at the tip of a peninsula projecting into Sydney Harbour, the building has had an enduring influence on architecture. The Sydney Opera House comprises three groups of interlocking vaulted ‘shells’ which roof two main performance halls and a restaurant. These shell-structures are set upon a vast platform and are surrounded by terrace areas that function as pedestrian concourses. In 1957, when the project of the Sydney Opera House was awarded by an international jury to Danish architect Jørn Utzon, it marked a radically new approach to construction." In: UNESCO

AU-173543 sent by "MelbPrincess"

"Montezuma Falls is Tasmania’s highest waterfall, located near Rosebery on the state’s west coast. Rosebery is a 90-minute drive south of Burnie (125 kilometres).

The track to the Falls begins at Williamsford, two kilometres south of Rosebery. This easy, three-hour return walk along a level track takes you right to the base of the 104 metre Falls through pleasant park-like rainforest including leatherwood, myrtle, sassafras and giant tree ferns. You may see native wildlife along the way, including several species of birds. The track follows the historic route of the former North East Dundas Tramway right to the base of Montezuma Falls." Yallingup Caves in Busselton - Australia

© Midge

unused

"Ngilgi Cave, previously known as Yallingup Cave, is a Karst cave to the northeast of Yallingup, in the southwest of Western Australia. It was discovered by Edward Dawson in 1899 when searching for stray horses. He acted as a guide to the cave from December 1900 to November 1937.

In many sections of the cave a red layer of soil can be seen, this is called Paleosol. […]

It was originally named for the nearby town of Yallingup but later renamed to acknowledge the cave's part in Australian Aboriginal mythology. Ngilgi (pronounced Neelgee) was a good spirit who triumphed in battle against an evil spirit Wolgine." In: Wikipedia

Victoria - Australia

Shinta from Indonesia surprised me with this multiview postcard from Victoria state in Australia. This state is also the home of a penguin colony !

"Victoria is the second most populous state in Australia. Geographically the smallest mainland state, Victoria is bordered by New South Wales to the north, South Australia to the west, and Tasmania to the south, on Boundary Islet.
Victoria is Australia's most densely populated state, and has a highly centralised population, with almost 75% of Victorians living in Melbourne, the state capital and largest city." In: Wikipedia

Millaa Millaa Falls - Australia

"Shinta" from Indonesia sent this amazing waterfall! As she says on the card, "the view reminds me of Eden", and I agree!

"The Millaa Millaa Falls are adjacent to the town of Millaa Millaa, on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, Australia. Millaa Millaa is an Aboriginal word meaning plenty of water or waterfall. A popular destination of international tour operators, the falls are 18.3 metres high with a pool suitable for swimming at their base. The Millaa Millaa Falls are accessed by sealed road off the Palmerston Highway about 5 minutes from the township of Millaa Millaa." In: Wikipedia

The Great Barrier Reef - Australia

Sent by "hmassese"

"The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq mi). The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in north-east Australia.

The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. This reef supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981. CNN labeled it one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Queensland National Trust named it a state icon of Queensland.

A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit the impact of human use, such as fishing and tourism. Other environmental pressures on the reef and its ecosystem include runoff, climate change accompanied by mass coral bleaching, and cyclic population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish.

The Great Barrier Reef has long been known to and used by the Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and is an important part of local groups' cultures and spirituality. The reef is a very popular destination for tourists, especially in the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns regions. Tourism is an important economic activity for the region, generating $1 billion per year." In: Wikipedia

AU-40996 - Minnamurra Rainforest

From Australia came the AU-40996 postcard showing an amazing waterfall at Minnamurra Rainforest. I love waterfalls and this was my first card received from Postcrossing with a waterfall.

The Minnamurra Rainforest is a multi award winning attraction located in Budderoo National Park, a short fifteen minute drive west of Kiama past the village of Jamberoo (off Tourist Drive No: 9). Visitors can experience the spender and beauty of this rare remnant of subtropical and warm temperate rainforests which is representative of the once extensive rainforests of the Illawarra region.
Visitors regularly see first hand the fauna of the area such as the normally allusive Lyrebird, the Eastern Water Dragons, Swamp Wallabies and a host of bird species which make Minnamurra their home. In: http://www.kiama.com.au/accom_result1/minnamurra-rainforest/
